The Lagos State Government has announced plans to demolish a section of the well-known Landmark Beach Resort to make room for the construction of the coastal highway as part of the Lagos-Calabar road project.

Paul Onwuanibe, CEO/MD Land Mark

This decision was communicated in a letter dated March 19, 2024, addressed to Paul Onwuanibe, the proprietor of Landmark Beach Resort, signed by Tpl Shomolu O., Deputy Director of the Development Matters Department, representing the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

According to the letter, Onwuanibe was given a seven-day notice to vacate his multimillion-dollar beach resort, which falls within the proposed right of way for the planned 700-kilometer coastal highway. Onwuanibe, 58, expressed a mixture of emotions upon receiving the demolition order, having acquired the land in 2007 prior to the coastal highway project’s inception.

He stated that the resort, visited by approximately one million local and foreign visitors last year, hosts over 80 businesses, provides over 4,000 direct jobs, and contributes over 2 billion naira ($1.5 million) in annual tax revenue.

Notably, the Lagos state government had previously publicized the intention to demolish the resort through advertisements in two national newspapers.
