The Lagos Police Command intends to take disciplinary action against officers found soliciting bribes from a drone operator operating on the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge.

The Lagos State Police Command responded to a widely circulated video showing two officers questioning an individual operating a drone on the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge.

In the footage, a cyclist is seen being questioned by police officers, who inquire about the permit required for drone usage on the bridge. The cyclist admits to not having one and questions the necessity of such a permit in Nigeria. The officers explain that a permit from either the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) or the police is mandatory for drone operation. The encounter, lasting over an hour, ends with the officers allegedly soliciting a bribe, as captured on camera.

In an official statement, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the state police command, clarified that the officers were acting in accordance with Nigerian aviation laws, which mandate permits for drones weighing more than 250 grams. However, he condemned the officers’ unprofessional behavior, especially their alleged attempt to extort the drone operator, as evident in the video’s conclusion.

Furthermore, the statement announced that Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Adegoke Fayoade, mni, has instructed the Commanding Officer of 49 PMF Akodo, under whose jurisdiction the officers were deployed, to ensure their accountability through appropriate disciplinary measures.
