In Thalang district of Phuket, Thailand, authorities arrested two Nigerian men and a 32-year-old Thai woman, Kanyathanat Thotsatham, for their alleged participation in a romance scam.

The arrest took place during a raid on a residence in the Phatcharee Thalang housing estate on the night of Thursday, February 8, 2024. The police confiscated 50 sachets of cocaine and a digital balance from the premises.

Kanyathanat had an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the Samut Prakan Provincial Court for public fraud and falsifying information in a computer system. Additionally, the two Nigerian men were found to have overstayed their visas by 1,401 and 1,728 days, respectively.

Pol Lt Col Pitthaya Thepmuang, inspector of the Tourist Police Sub-Division 3, revealed that the investigation uncovered connections to a romance scam gang involving individuals from South Africa.

Kanyathanat was identified as working for the gang, responsible for handling financial transactions with a Nigerian leader living abroad.

Many individuals were victimized by the scam. During interrogation, the Nigerian suspects confessed to their involvement in the romance scam and admitted to selling cocaine to foreign tourists in Phuket to supplement their income. All suspects were transferred to Thalang station for legal proceedings.
