SUPER EAGLE

If the Super Eagles of Nigeria emerge victorious at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, the squad is set to receive a prize of $7 million (equivalent to N8.9 billion).

Nigeria earned their spot in the final of the 34th edition of the AFCON by defeating South Africa at the Stade de la Paix, Bouke, in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw following 120 minutes of play.

Additionally, for their qualification to the final tournament, the Eagles have already secured $4 million.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football, had previously announced a 40 percent increase in prize money before the tournament commenced.

As stated on the football governing body’s website on January 4, the champions of the tournament will now receive $7 million, which is $2 million more than the prize awarded at the previous edition held in Cameroon.

The runners-up in the African showpiece event will now receive $4 million (equivalent to N5 billion), while each of the losing semi-finalists, South Africa and DR Congo, will be awarded $2.5 million.

Additionally, each of the four quarter-finalists will take home $1.3 million. Speaking on these developments, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football, highlighted the significant progress made over the past two years in increasing the prize money for the AFCON and other major competitions.

He emphasized that the prize money for the AFCON winner has been raised to $7 million, reflecting a 40% increase from the previous edition. Dr. Motsepe expressed confidence that a portion of the prize money would contribute to football development and benefit various stakeholders, including Member Associations, with their administrative needs.
