NERC has approved an electricity tariff hike for Band A customers, as announced on Wednesday. Vice Chairman Musliu Oseni disclosed that the new rate will increase from N66 to N225 per kilowatt hour (KW/h).
Band A customers receive 20-24 hours of electricity daily, while Band B customers enjoy 16-20 hours, and Band C customers receive 12-16 hours daily. Band D customers benefit from 8-12 hours daily, while Band E customers only receive 4-8 hours of electricity consumption daily.
During a press conference held in Abuja, Oseni stated that Band A customers, comprising 15% of the country’s 12 million electricity users (approximately 1.8 million subscribers), will experience the tariff increase. He assured that customers in other bands will not be affected.
According to Bloomberg sources, power companies are expected to increase electricity prices for urban consumers from N68 to N200 ($0.15) per KW/h.
According to sources within the presidency familiar with the situation, this move aims to attract fresh investments and reduce the approximately $2.3 billion spent on tariff capping. The report emphasizes Lagos State subscribers under the Band A tariff scheme, who enjoy 20 to 24 hours of electricity consumption daily, as outlined in a document by the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company.
