Imo State Police Command has apprehended Chinenye Nwaneri on suspicion of murdering his alleged lover, Chienyenwa Nnodu.

Nwaneri, a member of the Umuodu vigilante group, was taken into custody after Nnodu’s lifeless body was discovered in a gutter outside an unfinished building on Madumere Street, Christ Road, Owerri.

According to Henry Okoye, the police spokesperson, officers recovered the deceased’s body following a distress call and launched an investigation.

It was revealed that Nnodu had been with her alleged lover, Nwaneri, on the night she was killed, leading authorities to suspect his involvement in her death.

The police have sent the deceased’s body to a forensic pathologist for autopsy to determine the cause of death.

According to the statement, a distress call from Bishop Silas Anoruo on 7/1/2024 alerted the authorities to the discovery of a deceased young woman in a gutter outside his unfinished building at Madumere Street, Christ Road, Owerri.

Responding to the call, operatives from Owerri Urban Divisional Headquarters arrived at the scene, retrieved the body, and transferred it to Imo State for autopsy.

Subsequent investigation identified the deceased as Chienyenwa Nnodua and indicated that she was last seen with her alleged partner, Chinenye Nwaneri, of No 43 Christ Church Road, Owerri, heading to his residence late in the night on 5/01/2024.

Prompted by suspicion, diligent operatives summoned Chinenye Nwaneri, a member of the Umuodu vigilante group, for questioning.

Initially denying any knowledge of the deceased, Nwaneri later admitted during interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) that he had been with her the night before she was discovered deceased in a gutter.

However, he denied any romantic involvement with her.

Testimonies from reliable witnesses, including the deceased’s sister and a vigilante colleague who was on duty with Nwaneri that night, corroborated the events.

The deceased’s sister revealed that Nwaneri had been her sister’s boyfriend for four years, confirming that she had informed her of her intention to spend the night at his residence on 5/01/2024.

Additionally, the vigilant colleague reported seeing Nwaneri with the deceased along Christ Church Road during a foot patrol at midnight.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the deceased’s body undergoing examination by a forensic pathologist to determine the cause of death.

Legal proceedings will be initiated pending the conclusion of the investigation.
