A tragic incident occurred in Lagos as a young man, aged 20, lost his life after jumping into a well.

The Lagos State Fire Service officials successfully retrieved the body of a 20-year-old man named Sodiq Olorunleye, who plunged into an abandoned well situated in the Shasha area of the state.

The body was recovered several hours after the tragic incident, which occurred in front of a mosque, shortly after morning prayers on Wednesday, February 28, 2024.

Witnesses noted that the deceased exhibited no prior signs of suicidal tendencies or distress, leaving the community puzzled about the motive behind his actions.

Benjamin Hundeyin, spokesperson for the State Police Command, confirmed the incident.

According to Hundeyin, the incident was reported to the Shasha police station by the owner of Shamseedeen mosque on Taiwo Close, Shasha, around 7 pm on the same day.

The mosque owner claimed that the deceased had jumped into an abandoned well in front of the mosque, and despite the efforts of neighbors to rescue him, their attempts proved futile.

“The victim’s lifeless body was retrieved around 12 noon by state fire service officials,” the PPRO reported. “Upon dispatching a team of detectives to the scene, it was observed that the corpse had been prepared for burial in accordance with Islamic rites. Nevertheless, investigations are underway.”
