A fatal clash erupted between Yoruba and Hausa traders in a Lagos market, resulting in one casualty.

Reports indicate that amidst clashes between Yoruba youths and Hausa traders at the Oluwole Market in Lagos State’s Ogba area, one individual was tragically killed while several others sustained injuries.

Although the exact cause of the conflict remains unconfirmed, sources suggest it began on Thursday night, February 22, 2024, and escalated into the following day.

The deceased, identified simply as Abbey, reportedly intervened in a dispute between two Hausa men and was allegedly stabbed by an unidentified assailant, resulting in fatal injuries.

According to the Daily Trust, Abbey succumbed to his wounds after bleeding profusely, inciting retaliatory violence between Yoruba and Hausa factions in the vicinity.

As a result of the reprisal, food items, including peppers and onions, belonging to Hausa traders, were reportedly destroyed.

Commercial operations within the market ground to a halt as a result.

Christopher, an Ogba resident who preferred to remain anonymous, informed the Nigerian Tribune, stating, “Late Thursday night, we received instructions to avoid the Oluwole Market vicinity.”

“We believed the situation had been resolved, but today, the conflict reignited, with individuals hurling various dangerous objects at each other,” said one eyewitness.

“Numerous individuals who had initially opened their shops hastily closed them, although they have since reopened.

The tension was eventually diffused thanks to the intervention of officers from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS).”
