There’s a possibility that Bobrisky might spend the Eid-il-fitri holiday in custody

Controversial crossdresser Okuneye Idris, popularly known as Bobrisky, may find himself spending the Eid-il-Fitri break behind bars.

He was arrested on April 3 and subsequently convicted by a Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday, April 5, 2024, after pleading guilty to charges of naira abuse brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC filed a six-count charge against Bobrisky, with the first four counts related to naira abuse and the remaining two concerning alleged money laundering.

Before proceeding with the charges, the EFCC prosecutor requested the court to dismiss counts five and six.

Bobrisky admitted guilt to the four-count charge of Naira abuse. Despite this, he requested leniency, claiming ignorance of the laws concerning Naira abuse.

He pledged to use his social media platform to educate his followers about these regulations.

“I am a social media influencer with over five million followers. I intend to create a video on my page to educate people about the act of spraying money. I assure you, Your Honor, that I will not repeat this mistake. I deeply regret my actions, Your Honor. This is my first offense,” he stated.

Following this, Justice Abimbola Awogboro set April 9, 2024, for Bobrisky’s sentencing and ordered his detention in EFCC custody until then. However, the Federal Government declared April 9 and 10, 2024, as public holidays for Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, as announced by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

declaration posed a conflict as April 9 coincided with Bobrisky’s scheduled sentencing. Unless Justice Awogboro decides to hold court today for the sentencing, Bobrisky is expected to spend his holiday in detention.
