A vigilante member was killed in Rivers state by suspected cultists.

On Saturday, April 7, 2024, gunmen believed to be cultists killed Uche Orukwo, a vigilante member, at Obidanso waterfront in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The incident occurred when members of the Diobu Vigilante Group (DVG), accompanied by police following a tip-off about cult activities, raided the waterfront around 9 pm.

According to a source who spoke with Punch, the suspected gang members had planned to ambush a rival group in an ongoing feud between two factions of a suspected cult group called ‘Deygbam’ upon the arrival of the security operatives.

“But when the suspected cultists noticed the security presence, they opened fire, resulting in the death of the vigilante member named Orukwo,” the source stated. SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the spokesperson of the State Police Command, confirmed Orukwo’s killing, mentioning that investigations were underway to apprehend the perpetrators.

“Our officers are in the area to ensure those responsible for the shooting are arrested and brought to justice,” she added.
