Prof Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, announced the recruitment of 2,497 doctors, midwives/nurses, and community health extension workers over the past six months.

This initiative aims to address the manpower shortage in the health sector resulting from the emigration of health workers.

Pate made this disclosure during a press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

Additionally, he mentioned that 1,400 health facilities have now been equipped with skilled birth attendants.

The Minister further revealed that the federal government would disburse N50bn as the initial installment of the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), which is designed to enhance access to primary healthcare.

Regarding the escalating pharmaceutical costs, the minister emphasized the necessity of addressing this issue.

“In the short term, an executive order will be forthcoming to mitigate the surging drug prices, while our medium to long-term objective entails domesticating imported drugs within the next three years, in collaboration with the Ministry of Trade.”
