Reports suggest that Jáuregui briefly left the field to rehydrate at the bench when an unidentified assailant approached him and fired at close range. The late Sergio Jáuregui, a former Bolivian international footballer, met a tragic end while participating in a friendly match in Mexico.

The 38-year-old defender was fatally shot six times during the match at around 11 am local time on Sunday in the Santa Inés neighborhood of Cuautla, Morelos.

The gunman swiftly fled the scene on a waiting motorcycle at the entrance to the ground, leaving the footballer mortally wounded. Despite the rapid response of emergency services and ambulances, Jáuregui succumbed to his injuries almost immediately.

Atlético de San Luis Rey, a team with whom Jáuregui had a significant playing history, expressed their sorrow through a heartfelt statement on their official Facebook page.

The message conveyed deep condolences to the late player’s family and acknowledged his dedication to the team during the Torneo de los Soles, expressing gratitude for his contributions on the field.

Jáuregui spent the majority of his professional career in Bolivia, with a brief stint at top-flight Swiss side Yverdon-Sport FC in 2005 lasting only a few months.

Despite earning 13 caps for the Bolivian national team, he retired from professional sports in 2015 at the age of 30, according to Diario AS.
