During the debate over federal lawmakers buying foreign luxury cars, Senator Sunday Karimi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Services, clarified their choice of foreign car brands instead of Nigerian-made ones. In an interview on Channels Television on October 25, he mentioned that they opted for foreign Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) Land Cruisers and Prados due to their “quality and durability.”

The senator hailing from the Kogi West Senatorial District stated, “Today, we decided for Toyota because Toyota has a name and a longstanding name for quality and durability…As our local manufacturing companies develop, we are going to patronise them. We need the vehicles for oversights, to travel all over our constituencies.

“If you look at Nigerian roads all over the Federation, we have a serious problem because nothing much has been done in the last years. Most of our roads are terribly bad.

“In future, as Nigerian manufacturing sector develops, we will (patronise them).”
