Security personnel deploy teargas and water against the Rivers Governor.

Rivers State governor Siminalayi Fubara

A new conflict has arisen within the Rivers State House of Assembly amidst speculations of an imminent impeachment process targeting the state governor, Sim Fubara.

On Monday, the House ousted its leader, Edison Ehie, a move widely interpreted as a potential precursor to the governor’s impeachment. Twenty-four Assembly members, including Speaker Martin Amaewhule, backed Ehie’s removal.

Meanwhile, the governor made an unexpected appearance at the Assembly Complex, causing House members to scatter for safety as tear gas was deployed outside the building.

Addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex, Fubara asserted that he had not engaged in any wrongdoing that would justify an impeachment by the Rivers State House of Assembly.

“Let them come out and tell River’s people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment,” Fubara said.

The governor also pledged to deliver the benefits of democracy to the state’s residents and indicated that he would address this issue at the right moment.

The occurrence occurred mere hours following a fire incident at the Assembly Complex on Sunday night.

It remains uncertain whether the fire is related to the political turmoil.
