Professional Doctor Acknowledges Discarding Removed Tissue from Young Patient with Intestinal Deficiency

In a significant development, Dr. Abayomi Baiyewu from Obitoks Hospital, who conducted the initial surgeries on the late Adebola Akin-Bright, has openly admitted that certain tissue samples removed from the 12-year-old boy, who suffered from intestinal issues, were inadvertently disposed of instead of being sent for histological analysis.

This revelation came to light as Dr. Baiyewu testified before an ad-hoc committee led by Hon. Noheem Adams, tasked with investigating the ‘missing intestines’ case related to young Akin-Bright.

Young Akin-Bright underwent two initial surgeries at Obitoks before being transferred to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he tragically passed away on September 19.

During a public hearing conducted by the Lagos State House of Assembly on October 5, a video detailing the committee’s investigation was presented.

In an official statement released by Eromosele Ebhomele, Media Assistant to Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, the Assembly highlighted that Dr. Baiyewu confessed to removing three parts from Master Akin-Bright during the surgery.

He acknowledged that these parts were mistakenly disposed of instead of being sent for histological examination.

Additionally, the video recording and evidence presented during the investigation revealed that Obitoks Hospital had employed only auxiliary nurses during the surgical procedure.

Dr. Baiyewu verified that the video accurately depicted the events of the investigation

Following the screening of the video, Professor Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, emphasized that the House had conducted a comprehensive investigation.

He further stated that the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), had temporarily halted the operations of Obitoks Hospital’s theatre due to its failure to adhere to standard medical procedures.

He mentioned that when Akin-Bright was admitted to LASUTH, his condition was extremely critical, requiring stabilization before any surgical intervention could take place.

During the surgery at LASUTH, the medical team noticed an unusual anomaly in his stomach – a significant portion of the small intestine was found to be missing.
