Nigeria should learn digital inclusion from foreigners – Expert

Nigeria should learn from countries like Switzerland and Singapore regarding rural broadband deployment and digital inclusion, a policy analyst, Timi Olagunju, has stated.

According to him, Nigeria also needs to attract more private sector investments in digital infrastructure to boost its digital economy potential.

In a statement, Olagunju asserted that to realise its full potential, the Ministry of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy must transition from broad objectives to specific, achievable policies.

“For a robust digital infrastructure, the National Information Technology Development Agency, Nigerian Communications Commission, and Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited play pivotal roles. They should attract private sector investments in digital infrastructure and learn from countries like Switzerland and Singapore regarding rural broadband deployment and digital inclusion. NIGCOMSAT should innovate to unlock revenue potential and bolster Nigeria’s digital infrastructure.”

The analyst further noted that the ministry should also partner with the Nigerian Exchange Ltd, Bank of Industry, Central Bank of Nigeria, and investors’ groups to help startups raise local capital.

Olagunju explained, “MoCIDE, collaborating with entities like the Nigerian Exchange Ltd, Bank of Industry, CBN, and investors’ groups, should work to increase patient capital availability. Sector-specific support requires cooperation with relevant ministries and private stakeholders. Success stories from Israel, Switzerland, and South Korea can guide our efforts.

“NITDA should lead in improving Nigeria’s Economic Complexity Index ranking. Collaboration between NCC and Nigerian Postal Service is necessary to grow intra-African trade. Successful trade models from Singapore and Mauritius can provide insights.”

Olagunju added that the ministry’s strategic plan holds immense promise for Nigeria’s digital future.
