Femi Falana accuses the Minister of Power of failing Nigerians due to the electricity tariff hike.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana has criticized Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu for failing to ensure consistent electricity supply despite increased tariffs.

Falana argues that the tariff hike lacks legal basis, as public hearings, required by Section 116 of the Electricity Act 2023, were not conducted. He questions the justification for the increase, especially since the promised uninterrupted power supply for Band A customers has not been delivered. Falana also expresses concern over what he describes as impunity on the part of the FG and NERC, stressing that their actions are not backed by laws.

He alleges that the Nigerian government is following directives from the World Bank and the IMF to remove subsidies and commercialize social services, making them unaffordable for many Nigerians.

Falana concludes by stating that the Minister of Power is acting in line with the IMF and the World Bank, which advocate for the removal of subsidies and the commercialization of social services, making them inaccessible to the majority of Nigerians.
