A 19-year-old in Kwara has been arrested for allegedly raping a minor.

Jamiu Akande, a 19-year-old man, was apprehended by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kwara State for allegedly raping a 9-year-old girl in the Pakata area of Ilorin, the state capital. Ayoola Michael, the NSCDC spokesperson in the state, revealed this information to reporters on Thursday, April 18.

The incident was reported by Mariam Yusuf, Director of the Child Unit at the state Ministry of Women Affairs, to the NSCDC office in Ilorin on Tuesday.

Michael elaborated that upon receiving a distress call from Babareke House in the Ipata Oloje area of Ilorin, the ministry decided to alert the NSCDC. The Command promptly responded, diligently pursuing the suspect until his capture, as stated in the report.

Preliminary investigations unveiled that the suspect frequently visited the victim’s home under the guise of visiting his friend, thus gaining access to her. On December 1st, 2023, he lured the victim to an unfinished building where he sexually assaulted her.

Furthermore, on April 16th, 2024, he sent her to purchase bread and then led her to a dilapidated building where he subjected her to further sexual abuse. The victim disclosed enduring sexual assaults by the suspect since December 2023.

The NSCDC’s spokesperson affirmed that the suspect admitted to the crime and will face prosecution in a court of competent jurisdiction.
