86-year-old individual sustained injuries as fire guts building in Kwara

An elderly man was injured in a midday fire that swept through a residential building in Ilorin, Kwara State’s capital, on Saturday.

Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, revealed that the fire erupted around noon when the 86-year-old man, who was cooking, briefly left his home. Upon his return, he found his room engulfed in flames.

Firefighters arrived swiftly, containing the blaze to one room out of the twelve in the building, minimizing damage to surrounding properties.

The injured man, distressed by the situation, re-entered the burning room, likely to salvage belongings, and suffered burns to his head. He was promptly taken to the nearest hospital for treatment.

Adekunle emphasized the importance of fire safety awareness, urging residents to remain vigilant and take preventive measures.

This incident follows a similar one on Thursday night when a fire, caused by a resident’s failure to properly extinguish a charcoal fire used for cooking, engulfed a 40-room flat at the Ile Muse compound in Ilorin.
