Two teenage girls drowned in Niger state after their canoe capsized.


Two teenage girls from Kofa community in Tafa Local Government Area of Niger State lost their lives in a canoe accident at Kota dam.

Hussaini Abubakar, the Commander of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) in Tafa, confirmed the incident to Daily Trust on April 15, 2024.

He stated that the mishap occurred around 5pm on Saturday when the victims, along with two other girls, boarded a canoe to visit Kadau community for Sallah.

Abubakar mentioned that the other two girls and the canoe driver were rescued and taken to the hospital.

Abdul Gambo, a fisherman, recounted hearing distress calls while repairing his canoe on the dam’s bank. He promptly rushed to their aid with his canoe, and together with others, managed to rescue three individuals, but unfortunately, two bodies were recovered from the water.
