Tragically, at least nine passengers lost their lives in a road accident on Monday along the Ikirun/Offa Expressway in Inisa. The incident occurred when the truck they were traveling in veered off the road and collided with the bush.

The truck, which was transporting bags of beans and passengers reportedly from Niger State en route to Edo State, lost control, leading to the fatal crash. Regrettably, all the victims succumbed to their injuries on the spot shortly after the accident.

Providing details on the incident, Kehinde Adeleke, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Osun Command, stated that the crash occurred in the early hours of Monday at the Yidi Junction in Inisa. The circumstances surrounding the accident are currently under investigation.

Adeleke further explained thus; “Today, Monday, December 25, 2023, one Mitsubishi Canter with plate number MNA606SB NIGER carrying bags of beans from Niger State to Benin, Edo State was involved in an accident in the early hours, which resulted in the death of nine people out of 12.

“The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officers evacuated and moved the three injured passengers to Orotunde Hospital Ikirun, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s morgue.”

“Bags of beans and the vehicle involved have been evacuated to the Inisa Police Divisional Headquarters”, the NSCDC image maker volunteered.

Another unfortunate Christmas Day incident unfolded in Ogun State, where two lives were lost in an accident along the well-traveled Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

According to eyewitnesses, the road crash occurred after the Sagamu Interchange, just before the Redemption Camp in Mowe, Ogun State. The incident involved an 18-seater Hiace bus that was heading from the interchange to Mowe.

Confirming the occurrence on Monday, the FRSC, through its spokesperson in Ogun State, Florence Okpe, reported that the Corps had promptly evacuated the bodies from the scene.

Okpe attributed the accident to the bus driver’s wrongful overtaking, stating,“The fatal crash occurred at about 1720 hrs on Christmas Day, involving 15 persons, which comprised of 12 male adults and three female adults. One person was injured and two persons were recorded dead (two male adults).

Two vehicles were involved a Toyota bus with registration TSE266XA, and a Mazda bus marked FKJ215XX. The suspected causes of the crash were wrongful overtaking and overspeeding.”

He said; “The injured victim was taken to Idera Hospital for medical attention and the corpses were deposited at the same hospital’s morgue.”

In response to the incident, Anthony Uga, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun State, offered advice to motorists, emphasizing the importance of avoiding speeding and maintaining full concentration on the road while driving.

Expressing sympathy for the families of the victims, Uga encouraged them to reach out to the FRSC in Sagamu for additional information regarding the tragic crash.
