President Bola Tinubu and Simon Lalong

President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, as confirmed by the Presidency.

Lalong will now proceed to the National Assembly as Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial, a seat he won as affirmed by an appeal court ruling dated November 7, 2023.

“Lalong has resigned. But it was not at the FEC meeting itself. It must have been after the meeting because, if it were earlier, the President or SGF would have announced it during the meeting,” a presidential aide

The ex-Plateau State Governor is expected to take the oath of office later this week, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio overseeing the ceremony, according to gathered information.

Lalong assumed the role of Director-General of the Tinubu Campaign Organisation in the months leading up to the February Presidential election.

He contested the Senate seat but faced defeat, as per the Independent National Electoral Commission’s results. Nevertheless, he contested the outcome in court and emerged victorious at the Court of Appeal.

It has been reported that Lalong, a lawyer and former two-term Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, privately submitted his resignation to the President after last Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House.

Confirming this, Imran Mohammad, a Twitter user associated with the President’s camp, mentioned, “President Tinubu, Accepted Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, Resignation from the cabinet, his valedictory will hold next FEC meeting.”
