The US Senate has passed a significant bill that could lead to the ban of TikTok in America.

The bill requires ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, to sell the platform within nine months, or face a US ban. It was part of a larger $95 billion package supporting foreign aid to Ukraine and Israel, receiving widespread support with 79 Senators voting for it.

Concerns about data privacy and national security prompted the move, despite TikTok’s assertions of independence from Chinese influence.

The company has criticized the bill, arguing it would harm free speech and the economy.
