The Senate endorses Adedeji as the FIRS Chairman.

Mr Zak Adedeji as Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

On Tuesday, the Senate granted approval for Mr. Zak Adedeji to assume the position of Chairman at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

Appearing before the upper chamber for his screening on Tuesday, Adedeji discussed his intentions to enhance the nation’s revenue, highlighting the lack of information in the oil and gas sector.

He pledged to significantly reduce revenue losses, emphasizing that the primary issue in the country revolves around the lack of accurate data. He stressed the importance of developing data as the foundation for informed decision-making.

According to him, this data would enable a better understanding of the precise number of crude oil vessels imported into the country and the corresponding tax revenues. Adedeji also mentioned that this data would aid in identifying individuals with significant wealth who are not paying their fair share of taxes, according to the FIRS chief.

Adedeji also pledged to streamline the identification system in Nigeria and enhance the country’s data analysis capabilities.

His confirmation took place more than a month after President Bola Tinubu designated him as the new Special Adviser on Revenue for the FIRS. Prior to this, Tinubu had instructed the former FIRS Chairman, Muhammad Nami, to take a three-month pre-retirement leave.

Subsequently, the President formally requested the Senate to promptly review Zak’s appointment for confirmation. Tinubu then wrote to the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, to confirm the nomination.
