The NLC elaborates on the reasons behind the ongoing protests in Lagos, Abuja, and various regions across the nation.

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)

Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), addressed the ongoing protests in Abuja, Lagos, and other parts of the country during a discussion with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, February 27.

He emphasized the prevalent hunger among citizens, questioning the silence imposed on speaking out against it.

Ajaero highlighted the primary concerns of the protests, focusing on the urgency of addressing minimum wage issues to alleviate hunger.

He underscored the necessity of ensuring a living wage for all, particularly for those who are currently unemployed. Additionally, he referenced the United Nations’ recommendation that the poorest individuals should have access to at least $2 daily for sustenance.

Ajaero further elaborated on the financial requirements for basic necessities such as food, transportation, accommodation, and medical expenses, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address these pressing economic challenges.

Ajaero leveled accusations against the federal government, asserting that it failed to act upon the proposals made by the NLC subsequent to the removal of fuel subsidy.

He contended that while hunger existed before, it escalated significantly post-deregulation.

Despite presenting suggestions following deregulation, Ajaero lamented their non-implementation.

He emphasized the critical role of addressing transportation challenges, stating that resolving them could have alleviated half of the prevailing issues.

Ajaero pointed out the ripple effects of increased petrol prices, noting how even basic tasks like transporting garri incurred additional expenses.

Furthermore, he alleged that initiatives such as cash transfers, CNG buses, and wage awards have not been put into effect.
