Sanwo-Olu’s election as Lagos State governor has been affirmed by the Supreme Court.

Governor Of Lagos State Gov. Sanwo-Olu

On January 12, the Supreme Court affirmed Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s election as the governor of Lagos State. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Sanwo-Olu the winner of the Lagos state governorship election in March 2023. However, his victory was challenged by Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV) of the Labour Party and Abdulazeez Adediran (Jandor) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). GRV, who scored 312,329 votes, and Jandor, with 62,449 votes, contested the outcome, leading to a legal battle at the Lagos State Election Petitions Tribunal.

On September 25, the tribunal dismissed the suits filed by Adediran and Rhodes-Vivour, upholding Sanwo-Olu’s victory. Dissatisfied with the decision, the aggrieved politicians took their cases to the Court of Appeal, which also dismissed their suits. Undeterred, both men sought redress at the Supreme Court.

In its verdict on January 12, the Supreme Court upheld the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Lagos, dismissing Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour’s appeal from the Labour Party for lacking in merit.
