Ogun Communities Rally in Protest Against Six-Month Blackout

Residents of Ayetoro in Ogun State’s Yewa North Local Government Area are up in arms against the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, citing six months of uninterrupted blackouts

. Acting under the banner of the Yewa North Patriotic Forum, they have issued a two-week ultimatum to IBEDC to restore power to Ayotoro and 12 other communities in the local government area.

Expressing dismay over the power company’s apparent indifference, the youth conveyed their discontent through an open letter signed by the group’s president, Adeyemi Sunday, addressed to Governor Dapo Abiodun, Senator Solomon Adeola representing Ogun West Senatorial District, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, and other stakeholders. Regrettably, the letter was reportedly rebuffed at the IBEDC office in Abeokuta.

The group’s letter lamented the prolonged blackout in Ayetoro and neighboring communities, noting that some areas had not had electricity for up to two years.

In response, they have threatened to stage a peaceful and lawful protest, including picketing IBEDC offices, if the power situation is not resolved within the stipulated timeframe.

Appealing to the governor for intervention, the group emphasized the adverse impact of the blackout on the community’s livelihoods and businesses, urging urgent restoration of electricity supply and infrastructure upgrades.

This outcry follows similar grievances in Iperu, Governor Abiodun’s hometown, where youths threatened to picket IBEDC over 120-day blackouts.

In response, IBEDC spokesperson Busolami Tunwase cited restricted allocation as the major challenge affecting Ogun State’s electricity supply, expressing regret for the inconvenience caused and affirming efforts to improve the situation through collaboration with stakeholders.
