In a remarkable showcase of creativity and perseverance, Nigerian visual artist Lola Mewu, also known as Oyinlola Odumewu, has achieved a new Guinness World Record for the longest painting marathon. Lola embarked on this challenging journey on October 28, 2023, at the Safe House in Adeola Hopewell Street, Eti-Osa, Lagos, with the aim of surpassing the previous record set by Belgian-Canadian artist Roland Palmaerts in 2013, which stood at 60 hours.

Lola’s attempt to break this record garnered the attention of art enthusiasts and supporters nationwide. The painting marathon officially commenced at 6:30 p.m. on October 28, with Lola demonstrating her artistic talent and unwavering determination throughout the event.

In compliance with Guinness World Records (GWR) guidelines, Lola created a series of captivating artworks, including pieces titled “One Touch,” “Pemi Pada Owonromi,” and “Ejire Ara Isokun.” These artworks were subsequently auctioned and found eager buyers among art aficionados, with bidding starting at ₦40,000.

An outpouring of support from friends, family, and fellow Nigerians flooded social media with encouraging messages, as videos showcasing Lola’s unwavering commitment circulated online. Heartwarming moments captured her listening to voice notes filled with words of encouragement.

Several well-wishers visited her painting station at Safe House, offering moral support and enthusiastic cheers.

Lola reached the remarkable milestone of 72 hours, surpassing the previous record at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. This achievement, once officially confirmed, would make her the third Nigerian to achieve a Guinness World Record in 2023, following the earlier accomplishments of Philip Solomon and celebrity chef Hilda Baci.

In May 2023, 17-year-old pupil Philip Solomon, hailing from Oyemekun Grammar School in Akure, Ondo State, secured a remarkable record. He achieved the most skips on one foot in 30 seconds, surpassing the previous record holder, Rasel Islam of Bangladesh, who accomplished 153 skips in January 2023.

In June 2023, celebrity chef Hilda Baci made headlines with her outstanding achievement. She established a record for the longest cooking marathon during an event spanning from May 11 to 15. Baci cooked non-stop for a staggering 93 hours and 11 minutes, preparing over 100 pots of food.

Lola’s feat not only spotlights her artistic prowess but also underscores the determination and resilience of Nigerians in their pursuit of excellence on the global stage. Her accomplishment is poised to serve as a source of inspiration for budding artists and creatives nationwide, motivating them to wholeheartedly pursue their passions and dreams.
