The Lagos State Government has issued an immediate closure order for the Lekki Conservation Centre (LCC) following concerns raised by a visitor on social media about the condition of the canopy walkway at the facility. The government has also mandated swift and extensive repairs to rectify the identified issues.

Lanre Omojola, the Director-General of Lagos State Safety Commission, emphasized that the safety of residents is the government’s top priority. During a recent visit to the Centre on January 23, Omojola confirmed that the faulty canopy walkway had been repaired.

In response to the incident, the management of Lekki Conservation, represented by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), addressed the situation. They clarified that the reported incident occurred on December 16, 2023, and the canopy walkway was promptly closed for repairs on the same day. The Foundation asserted that their technicians, who were involved in constructing the walkway, are well-trained and equipped to operate and maintain the facility.

Highlighting the meticulous maintenance efforts, the Foundation acknowledged wear and tear as a normal occurrence but emphasized their accident-free track record since the facility’s opening in 2015. They reassured the public of the safety of the canopy walkway and expressed gratitude for the cooperation of visitors in ensuring a secure environment.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NCF, Oladapo Soneye, explained that the Centre has been officially closed for routine maintenance since January 16, 2024. Soneye reassured the public that the LCC is dedicated to conservation ideals and pledged to reopen to the public on February 1, 2024, after thorough facility maintenance. He underscored the commitment to nature conservation, protection of species, and biodiversity maintenance for the benefit of present and future generations, ensuring a safe and serene experience for all nature enthusiasts.
