The Ajah Market and Ogba City Mall in Lagos have been temporarily closed by the Lagos State Government due to what it termed “infractions related to waste disposal.”

This information is as per a statement issued by the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Monday.

“The Lagos State Government has shut Ogba City Mall, Ikeja, and Ajah Market, Etti-Osa, for sundry waste disposal offences,” LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs Folashade Kadiri said in the statement.

“The action was carried out by the combined enforcement teams of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA; State Task Force on Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences, LASTMA and LAGSEC (KAI).”

The spokesperson for LAWMA further mentioned that on Sunday, the enforcement team also removed shanties and unauthorized vendors’ structures along the Ajah BRT corridor and Ajah Jubilee Bridge.

On Sunday, November 5, at the direction of the HC MOE&WR, personnel from the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and KAI sealed the OGBA SHOPPING MALL located next to the Sunday Market.

Following this situation, Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab of Lagos State’s Environment and Water Resources affirmed that this action aligns with the government’s determination to persist in its campaign against unsanitary conditions and haphazard waste disposal practiced by markets and businesses.

“We are stepping up action on this administration’s zero tolerance for filth and reckless waste disposal by traders and business facilities,” he was quoted as saying.

“We have continuously warned business owners to expect action if they refuse to do the needful to sustain the environment. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration will not relent in its pursuit of this lofty objective for overriding public good”.

Meanwhile, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, reaffirmed the ongoing nature of the zero-tolerance initiative.

“For the umpteenth time, we are encouraging all business owners and the markets, to shun filth and put measures in place, to guarantee responsible waste disposal in their places of operation,” he mentioned.

The action taken on Sunday is the most recent step in the crackdown on unsanitary conditions within the commercial city, resulting in the closure of numerous businesses and markets due to their failure to adhere to proper environmental standards.
