Iranian Nobel Peace Laureate Narges Mohammadi Faces New Trial and Possible Prison Transfer.

The legal proceedings, set to commence on Tuesday at a revolutionary court in Tehran, mark the first trial for Mohammadi since her family received the 2023 prize on her behalf in Oslo on December 10.

The specific charges remain unclear, but they are presumed to be linked to her actions within Tehran’s Evin prison, where she steadfastly advocated against Iran’s Islamic authorities and the compulsory hijab for women.

“The first trial of Narges Mohammadi after receiving the Nobel Peace Prize will be held at 10:00 am (0630 GMT) on December 19 in Branch 26 of the revolutionary court,” the family said in a statement.

The statement further indicated that in the event of a conviction in this specific case, there is a potential risk of her being instructed to serve the sentence in a prison located outside the Iranian capital.

“It was announced that, due to political and security issues, the execution of the sentence would take place outside Tehran,” the family said, adding that the request for this had come from the intelligence ministry.”

Narges Mohammadi, aged 51, has experienced frequent periods of imprisonment over the past twenty years, with her most recent sentence beginning in November 2021.

This upcoming trial marks the third legal proceeding she will face concerning her actions in prison. In the previous two instances, she received a 27-month prison sentence along with four months of street sweeping and social work.

Over the last two decades, Mohammadi has been arrested 13 times, facing a cumulative sentencing of 31 years in prison and 154 lashes.
