In Lagos, a pregnant woman who was assaulted and confined by her husband has been rescued by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA).

The Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, revealed the incident in a statement, stating that the agency received a distress call on January 17 from a reporter about a potential domestic violence case.

Mrs. Vivour-Adeniyi explained, “Following a recent tragic incident involving the death of a seven-month pregnant woman due to domestic violence, the agency received another distress call from a mandated reporter concerning another alleged domestic violence case. This involved a pregnant woman who had reportedly been physically assaulted by her partner and subsequently locked in their Mushin apartment.”

She continued, “The reported assault led to the expectant mother losing consciousness, prompting intervention from concerned neighbors who rushed her to the hospital for medical attention.” The DSVA Executive Secretary informed that the agency promptly contacted the Lagos State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad, leading to the arrest of the alleged perpetrator.

“The suspect has been apprehended, and the survivor remains unconscious,” she added. Emphasizing the state’s zero-tolerance stance towards domestic violence, Mrs. Vivour-Adeniyi reiterated the agency’s commitment to assisting survivors. “We underline the potential dangers and negative ripple effects of domestic violence on survivors and society at large. The State Government remains resolute in holding perpetrators of these heinous crimes accountable,” she stated.

Acknowledging the prompt action of the neighbors who called for help, the DSVA boss encouraged victims of domestic violence to break the silence and seek assistance. “Report promptly to authorities like the DSVA, either through the toll-free hotline 08000 333 333 or by visiting Novel House, Plot 3, Otunba Jobi Fele Way, Central Business District, Alausa, Ikeja,” she urged.
