In Kano, a Chinese man has been sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of killing his Nigerian girlfriend.

In the north-western region of Kano State, a Chinese man named Geng Quandong was sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, Ummulkusum Sani Buhari, also known as Ummita.

The verdict was delivered by Justice Sanusi Ado Ma’aji at the Kano State High Court located at Miller road, Bompai.

The incident occurred on September 16, 2022, when Geng Quandong entered the family home of 23-year-old Ummita, a corps member, and fatally stabbed her during an altercation.

Subsequently, Geng fled the scene but was apprehended by the police and brought to trial.

According to the victim’s mother, Geng forcefully entered the residence, pushing her down before proceeding to Ummita’s room where he committed the crime.

During the court proceedings, Geng admitted to the murder, citing his heartbreak over Ummita marrying another person despite his intentions to marry her.

This tragic incident led to the conviction of Geng Quandong, who now faces the death penalty for his actions.

Geng revealed that he had invested significantly in preparations for his wedding with Ummita.

He disclosed that he had purchased wedding dresses totaling N1.5 million, along with other attire for the occasion, including ‘Asoebi’ for her friends, and N700,000 in new currency notes for spraying during the ceremony.

Despite Ummita’s betrayal and subsequent marriage to another man, Geng claimed that she continued to ask him for money. On one occasion, when she visited Kano, she ensured they met face-to-face.

Geng further elaborated, stating, “In addition to the substantial financial support I provided, I frequently treated her to outings at upscale venues like Bristol Palace and Central Hotel.”

He detailed his lavish expenditures, which included purchasing a house valued at N4 million, a car worth N10 million, and providing N18 million as startup capital for her business.

Additionally, he spent N500,000 on bags and shoes for her new shop, as well as N1 million on laces and wrappers. Furthermore, he mentioned funding the construction of a house in Abuja and buying gold worth N5 million.

Geng also disclosed that he gave Ummita N6 million for processing her certificate at Sokoto University and N1 million for installing a solar system in their residence.

On Tuesday, March 26, 2024, following the prosecution’s demonstration of the Chinese national’s culpability in the murder, the court delivered its verdict. Quandong, aged 47, was pronounced guilty of culpable homicide, an offense punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code Law of Kano State.

As a result, he was convicted accordingly.
