The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, announced plans to prohibit unpainted taxis and buses from operating on the roads of the nation’s capital in a bid to address the issue of “one chance.” Speaking during a media chat in Abuja, Wike clarified that the intention was to enhance safety and combat criminal activities associated with unidentified vehicles.

Wike stated, “We will enforce a ban on vehicles that lack the FCT color and are not registered by the FCTA for commercial operations in the territory. This ensures that drivers are certified by the FCT, and the approved buses and taxis adhere to FCT standards. As a passenger, you won’t take the risk of boarding any vehicle with uncertain credentials.”

Additionally, Wike emphasized the need for Uber operators to register for operation in Abuja, requiring both drivers and vehicles to be certified and profiled by security agencies to maintain order in the city.

Expressing concern about the absence of an official terminal for residents to board buses to specific destinations, Wike outlined plans for the 2024 fiscal year to construct at least three terminals. This initiative aims to create a centralized system, ensuring accountability for both drivers and vehicles departing from these terminals, thereby reducing the potential for criminal activities associated with random roadside pickups.

Wike concluded, “Once these terminals are established, individuals will no longer need to risk flagging down a taxi on the road. This strategic approach will contribute to a decrease in criminal incidents, promoting a safer transportation environment.”
