EFCC files new charges against Emefiele, alleging he printed N684.5m notes with N18.9bn.

The EFCC has lodged new charges against Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

In the four-count indictment, Emefiele is accused of authorizing the printing of N684,590,000 notes amounting to N18.96 billion. The charges allege that Emefiele violated the law with the intention to harm the public during the implementation of the naira swap policy under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Additionally, the agency accuses Emefiele of unlawfully sanctioning the withdrawal of N124.8 billion from the consolidated revenue fund of the federation.

Emefiele is slated to face these charges before Maryann Anenih, a judge at a federal capital territory (FCT) high court, on April 30.

This marks the third criminal case against him. Initially arraigned on November 17, 2023, before Hamza Muazu, a judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) high court, on a six-count charge of procurement fraud, Emefiele pleaded not guilty.

The charges have since been expanded to 20 counts, encompassing alleged criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to commit forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit a felony.

Furthermore, on April 8, Emefiele, along with Henry Omoile, an official of the apex bank, faced charges before Rahman Oshodi of the special offences court in Ikeja, Lagos, over an alleged $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion fraud.
