Drama unfolds in the Ogun State Assembly as Speaker Oluomo faces impeachment.

This morning witnessed a dramatic turn of events at the Ogun State House of Assembly complex, where 18 out of the 26 members executed the impeachment of Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, the Speaker. The lawmakers, in unanimous agreement, subsequently elected Hon. Oludaisi Elemide from Odeda State Constituency to assume the position of the new speaker.

The grounds for Oluomo’s impeachment include allegations of embezzlement of funds, highhandedness, and related offenses. On September 6, 2022, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Oluomo before a Federal High Court in Lagos on charges of alleged N2.475bn money laundering. Alongside Oluomo, three others – Oladapo Samuel, Adeyemo Taiwo, and Adeyanju Nimota Amoke (currently at large) – faced 11 counts of conspiracy, forgery, stealing, and money laundering filed against them by the EFCC.

The EFCC’s prosecution counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), informed the court that the defendants committed the alleged offenses between 2019 and 2022, involving the misappropriation of N2.475bn from the treasury of the Ogun State House of Assembly. Oluomo, however, secured bail as the trial progresses.
