Tragedy struck in Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State when two youths lost their lives after a deep mining well they were digging collapsed on them. The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at Shikpeshe along Buya Road.
Sadly, the two youths suffocated inside the collapsed well, while three others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital.
Local reports suggest that illegal miners had discovered a rare mineral, Tourmaline, in the area and enlisted the help of the community youths to exploit it. Over a period of about four months, the youths diligently dug the well to an unknown but perilous depth.
In response to the tragic event, Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
