The coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) is calling for dialogue with discontented member countries to prevent the potential disintegration of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Comprising the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), West Africa Civil Society Forum (WACSOF), and Transition Monitoring Group (TMG), these groups made the plea during a media interactive session held in Lagos on Monday, February 5th.

Additionally, they urged for the restoration of democratic governance in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, where military coups have seized power.

In a joint communique issued at the conclusion of the dialogue, the coalition expressed concern over the recent withdrawal announcements from ECOWAS by Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, stressing the need to address such threats promptly.

The CSOs advocated for lifting sanctions imposed on member states, which have particularly affected vulnerable populations, including women and children.

Highlighting the commitment made in the 1976 non-aggression treaty, they emphasized the importance of mutual respect among member states to maintain regional peace and prosperity.

Signed by CISLAC’s Executive Director, Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), WACSOF’s General Secretary, Kop’ep Dabugat, and a representative from TMG, Najaatu Mohammed, the communique underlined the urgency for reflection among ECOWAS member states to preserve the region’s achievements in integration and peacekeeping efforts.

Furthermore, it emphasized the necessity of diplomacy and dialogue in resolving conflicts, especially considering ongoing discussions regarding a single market to enhance trade and development in the region.
