María López, a 24-year-old Nicaraguan woman, had to undergo a second burial after her family exhumed her body under the belief that she was still alive.

She had passed away on February 11 at New Dawn Hospital in the coastal town of Waspam and was laid to rest on February 12, as reported by a local outlet, SNC.

On February 15, prompted by a call to their daughter’s cellphone alleging she was still alive, López’s parents had her coffin excavated from its burial place at a cemetery.

López’s body was subsequently extracted from the coffin and transported to the family residence.

There, she was cleansed with salt, vinegar, and lemons, before being laid on a bed as family and friends gathered for a vigil.

Following concerns from certain family members that López might have been pregnant, a doctor from New Dawn Hospital visited their home to conduct tests, ultimately confirming her death.

Despite the physician’s assessment, Waspam’s city risk management director Kenny Mayorga stated that the family remained unconvinced and decided to seek evaluation from a traditional healer to ascertain her condition.

They asserted that López exhibited signs of tears and sweat on her forehead.
