Anambra community disowns woman who tried to sell two of her sons for N1.8m

The community of Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State has distanced itself from Chinyere Chukwu, a woman apprehended while attempting to sell two of her sons for N1.8 million.

Chukwu, a mother of 11 children, was arrested along with her 17-year-old daughter, Joy Chukwu, who was implicated as her accomplice in the scheme.

During interrogation following her arrest, Chinyere Chukwu admitted to being from Ozubulu and revealed that her husband had passed away after they had only two children.

She further explained that she had subsequently given birth to children from other men and sought to sell two of them to provide for the rest.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare Ify Obinabo, having learned of Chukwu’s intent, posed as a prospective buyer for the children.

A delegation from Ozubulu visited the office of the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare to assert that the woman in question was not a member of their community.

Led by the President General, Chief Chris Ononuju, and Lady Ndupu Clara, the delegation clarified that the suspect was merely a resident of the community and had no ties through either citizenship or marriage to any community member.

Ononuju emphasized, “We have conducted thorough investigations, and all findings indicate she is not from Ozubulu. She neither hails from nor is married into our community.”

“The man she referred to as her husband, whom she alleged to be deceased, is still alive.

He is our brother, and his wife passed away six or seven years ago. He has not remarried since.

Chinyere Chukwu resides in his house as a tenant. She only lived in our community temporarily, and her activities were ambiguous.

She had been previously requested to leave the community.

Chukwu initially moved to the community with her husband, but they encountered marital issues, leading to his departure.

She now falsely claims that he has passed away.”

He further remarked, “We are deeply dismayed by the tarnishing of our community’s reputation.

Chinyere Chukwu is a stranger to us, and she is not wedded to any of our community members. It’s evident to us that the children she is claiming are not offspring of the man she alleges.”
