NYSC Member Slumps, Dies While Watching Nigeria, South Africa Match

A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member named Samuel reportedly collapsed and passed away while watching the Super Eagles of Nigeria face off against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana during the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

According to an account from the Nigerian Tribune, an eyewitness stated that Samuel, who was serving in Adamawa State, tragically passed away before the thrilling shootout that secured Nigeria’s spot in the final.

“We mourn the loss of a fellow Nigerian,” the witness expressed, reflecting on the somber incident that occurred during the celebratory atmosphere at the Sports Viewing Center (SVC) in Numan.

The Corps member serving in Numan, originally from Kaduna, collapsed before the winning goal’s kick-off.

Sadly, he passed away before reaching the hospital in Numan.

Mr. Jingi Dennis, the NYSC Coordinator in Adamawa state, confirmed the tragic incident in a telephone conversation with the publication.

“I received news of his death last night and hope to obtain more details today,” he stated.

According to his colleagues who accompanied him to watch the match, the late corps member expressed his dislike for penalty shootouts, bowed his head, and suddenly collapsed.

He was pronounced dead at the General Hospital in Numan by the attending doctor.
