10th Assembly: APC chieftain backs Abbas for Speaker

A chieftain of All Progressive Congress and member-elect for Etsako Federal Constituency in Edo State, Dekeri Anamero, has commended the ruling party over its choice of popular Kaduna lawmaker, Tajudeen Abbas, for the position of Speaker of House of Representatives.

The APC had micro-zoned the position of Senate president to the immediate past Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Godswill Akpabio and Deputy Senate President to the Chairman of Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Jibrin Barau.

In the House of Representatives, the seat of Speaker was zoned to Abass, while the reps-elect from South East, Benjamin Kalu, clinched the Deputy Speaker slot.

The decision was announced few weeks ago by the National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, after a three-and-a-half hour meeting of the National Working Committee.

The arrangement had sparked outrage from other aspirants in the race and their cronies, with many blaming the party leadership for not consulting them before making the announcement.

Reacting to the development in a statement issued on Sunday evening, Anamero, describes the party zoning as a game changer targeted at ensuring a smooth run for the incoming administration.

According to him, zoning and endorsement are prevalent in party politics, adding that aspirants who did not make the list should take it in good fate.

The Edo lawmaker also enjoined his colleagues in the lower chamber to support, mobilize and vote for the APC anointed candidates

Anamero said, “Hon. Abbas Tajudeen is eminently qualified on account of his rich legislative experience, versatility, capacity and unmatched skill in human relation.

“He also has a great reputation of having over 10 motions, a record of 73 bills of which 21 has been assented to by Mr. President. All these qualities are required ingredients for anyone seeking to lead the House should possess.

“The emergence of Hon. T.J. Abbas as Speaker would strengthen the performance of the House, enhance service delivery to the Nigerian people, promote transparency in the conduct of legislative duties and deliver a people-parliament that Nigerians would be proud of.”
